Bring In The Bling Via Bing Cashback 03 March 2010 at 12:01 pm by admin

Moderator: Matt Van Wagner, President, Find Me Faster

Speakers:

Meagan Rochelle, Search Solutions Specialist, Microsoft
Nicholas Ward, Product Manager, Range Online Media

How many people are using Bing Cashback, Matt asks? About a quarter of the audience raises their hand. The rest are interested to find out how it might work for them. Matt is excited for Bing Cashback. The program gets to the heart of Bing’s problem. Bing is a good decision-making search engine, and the program gets people to at least try another engine. Empowered shoppers and advertisers are showing that Cashback is a great opportunity.

At yesterday’s keynote by Steve Ballmer, he said that he thinks Microsoft will continue to invest in the Bing Cashback program. So what’s the general feeling about it?

Analysis of Bing-related tweets shows about 40 percent positive and 60 percent negative.

In Bing forums, the comments are almost all neutral. Typically, the authors were playing it safe with their comments and are actually ambivalent. Though, these forum members are there because they believe their feedback will be taken by Microsoft. As far as Bing reps, a little more than half the sentiment is positive and the rest is negative. The reps are positive in their communications but they’re uncertain about the still-new product.

Meagan Rochelle

Meagan is now on the podium. She’s on the Cashback team. She’s going to talk high-level about why Microsoft is investing in shopping and Cashback. She’ll also go into detail about how this audience can use Cashback.

When Bing launched they wanted to focus on four core verticals, with one being shopping. They’ve tried to provide tools and resources to help shoppers find and purchase a product they want.

State of the Retail Economy

Consumers ranked what they use to help them shop:

  1. Search Engines
  2. Coupon Sites
  3. Comparison Sites
  4. Auctions
  5. Classifieds

Shoppers employ numerous online resources. Retail e-mails and coupon sites are widely used by online shoppers. Social media, consumer reviews, blogs and discussion boards resonate with shoppers. Shoppers are doing a lot of research to get the best deal.

Bing Shopping Experience

The shopping vertical is meant to be research heavy and offers education around Cashback. When a product search is performed, they’ve laid it out to help refine search, given the option to look only at Cashback products, or browse related categories. On an individual product page there are reviews, price comparisons and details on the product.

Two Cashback Models

Bing Cashback Search:

  • Advertisers participate in paid search ads (CPC) through adCenter
  • Customers perform a product search on Bing, click the ad and are brought to the advertiser’s site

Bing Cashback Shopping:

  • Advertisers participate in a comparison shopping (CPA)
  • Customers search for a product in shopping Vertical Search and select to go to the advertiser’s site

The rest of the presentation will focus on the latter.

From the consumer side, the flow is cashback.com > compare prices > advertiser site

Search

  • Search for specific items
  • Browse featured products and stores

Compare

  • Highest ranked seller has the lowest total price

Buy

  • Wait 60 days
  • Receive money

From the advertiser side, the opportunities include:

  1. Cashback Search and search ads
  2. Cashback shopping CPA data feed
  3. Shopping CPC data feed

Cashback Momentum

  • Over 44 million offers in the product catalog
  • Over 1200 active merchants
  • Over $100 million of earned rewards

Seasonal promotional offers are another opportunity for participating merchants. They’re really working to market the program to the consumer. Bing Cashback users are heavy shoppers. Cashback users and Bing shopping users are heavy shoppers, averaging more shopping visits per month than a typical shopper.

Bing leads in driving conversions across categories

Bing users are equally or more likely to convert than other searchers

Bing users are significantly more likely to make an apparel, electronic and home décor purchase compared to Google and Yahoo users.

Bing Cashback Slide

The higher the rebate offered, the higher the average order size.

Best Practices for Cashback Optimizations

  • Use highest Rebate percentage your margin will allow for competitive net price to consumer
  • Review the performance of your offers periodically and remove from your feed offers that do not perform up to your expectations
  • Utilize information about Bing Cashback in your offline promotions
  • Capitalize on Bing Cashback marketing promotions.

Getting Started

  • Benefits of Cashback shopping CPA data feed
  • Only pay for actual sales
  • Shares back 100 percent of the advertising spend with the consumer
  • Zero click fraud concerns
  • No complicated web analytics necessary
  • Sell all of your products at the ROI you set in the merchant center

Implementation

  • Set up merchant account/billing
  • Implement order tracking via pixel/batch
  • Upload product catalog (datafeed)
  • Allocate resources for ongoing program management
Nicholas Ward

Nicholas is up next to talk about Cashback from the advertiser’s side. Cashack traffic grew almost 500 percent YoY for his clients. It’s great because it’s a flat CPA and they know what to expect. Cashback has been a success for his early adopting clients.

  • Stable traffic with consistent growth
  • Predictable return
  • The ability to scale Cashback percent

The two entry barriers:

Barrier 1: Is Cashback right for our brand?

  • Many brands are already here
  • Better integration = higher importance
  • Program differences drive flexibility

If you move forward, plan to:

  • Answer your users
  • Monitor religiously, especially social
  • Invest in proper integration
  • Regularly audit results

Barrier 2: The documentation is a little (too) complicated

  • 35: the number of pages of the implementation doc
  • 5: the number of pages it should be
  • 2: out of 5, the average difficulty of implementation

+ SEO Weekend Update: Local, Mobile and Maps By admin 02 February 2010 at 5:39 pm and have No Comments

I’m a day late in climbing out from under the ever-piling heap called my feed reader — but hey, if Punxsutawney Phil can claw his way to the surface today, I can too. Here’s the search news from over the weekend through today, with a special focus on local and mobile news.

Local Events Added to Bing Maps

The Local Events application in Bing now features event listings. From Bing Maps, go to the Map Apps (if you don’t already have Silverlight installed you’ll be prompted to download it) and select Local Events. From there the local events will populate on the map as well as the navigation pane to the left. From here you can sort events by date and category. [Unless it breaks your browser altogether, like it did for me. --Susan] Currently, the calendar and event site Zvents is feeding the event listings to Bing, and more listing partners may be in store for the future.

Bing Maps Local Events feature

“Enchanced Listings” Ads Now in Google Local Results

Google Maps is also boasting a new feature called Enhanced Listings. The feature allows local businesses to add rich media to their listings for a $25 per month fee. The categories for enhancement include photos, videos, coupons, menus and more. Users will see a yellow indicator next to the businesses map listing, which they can select to expand and view. Businesses can apply for and control this feature through Google’s Local Business Center.

Mozilla Firefox Browser Goes Mobile

The Firefox browser is now mobile ready, complete with many features power users have come to rely on. Known for its expansive library of add-ons, Firefox Mobile is now the first and only mobile browser to support add-ons. Other features include Weave Sync, which allows for saved history, bookmarks, tabs and passwords for seamless computing between desktop and mobile devices. And the Awesome Bar lets users search for favorites and previously visited pages. Currently it’s only available for the Nokia N900, but here’s hoping it rolls out to other devices soon.

Illegal Tree Cutters Caught Red Handed by Google Street View Camera

In a neighborhood in Vancouver, Canada, one crime raises questions over Google Street View’s violation of personal privacy. A resident applied for two permits required to cut trees of a certain size, and ended up cutting down 23 instead. The act was caught by a Google Street View automobile, and now prosecutors are deciding if and how the images can be used as evidence. Does the fact that the individual was committing a crime excuse the invasive way the evidence was gathered? Privacy advocates have long been wary of Google’s Street View photography, and I have to wonder if this case highlights the fine line between information gathering and privacy violation.

That’s it for your weekend in local search. As always, stay tuned throughout the week for more news and analysis. Until then, stay local!

+ Friday Recap: Wolf Moon Edition By admin 29 January 2010 at 4:47 pm and have No Comments

Oh happy, glorious, liberating Friday. We’re so glad you’ve come back! What’s in store for the recap today? Truth be told, I don’t even know. We must read on to find out!

full moon over city

The biggest, brightest full moon of the year happens tonight. Tonight’s full moon also happens to be the first of the year, an event known as the wolf moon. If you’ve got clear skies, celebrate by snatching your three wolf moon shirt from the closet and check out this celestial beauty.

Before voting closes tonight, take a minute to vote for your favorite finalists of the SEMMY Awards. The SEMMYS honors the best Internet marketing blog posts of the year as chosen by the community. Congrats to all the finalists on this distinction! If you’re not really one to pick favorites, you’ll still enjoy the SEMMYS for pulling together and categorizing a ton of incredible posts from the last year.

Inc., publishers of the annual Inc. 500 list of fastest-growing private companies in the U.S., is predicting the best performing and worst performing industries for the decade ahead. Several tech industries, including search engines and VoIP providers, made the top of the list, while many manufacturing industries were found in the bottom.

Survey results are in! What did the participants of a poll say about the role of blogging in overall marketing goals? Check out TopRank Blog’s analysis of the report. What? You don’t want me to spoil the ending, do you?

Now I never thought I’d say this, but there is such a thing as too much bacon. For instance, here we see bacon to the crazy degree:

domino's pizza

This one’s probably had marketers scratching their heads ever since those counterintuitive commercials started rolling out. The pizza chain Domino’s is in the middle of an image re-vamp campaign where they admit to passing off cardboard for pizza all these years. Risky move, but could it work? Domino’s CMO shares his insight into the campaign in a revealing interview. Smart move or suicide — what do you think? [My roommate is unhappy. She actually liked the old recipe. …she's very odd. --Susan]

Next week in Spokane, Washington, the first Local University event will be held. The half-day workshop will teach area businesses about locally focused Internet marketing. I didn’t hear about this event in time to include it in our SEO Newsletter’s Shindigs this month, so spread the word to your friends in Washington state!

Pope Benedict XVI has been involved in social media in the five years since he became pope and he’s now encouraging priests to blog, be active on Facebook, and publish YouTube videos. The pope understands marketing and is, like, hip. Color me impressed.

Social-media-interested Businesses, individuals and priests will all appreciate these tips for how to write better tweets and how to better engage Facebook fan page fans. Don’t forget to check your Facebook privacy settings while you’re at it!

Google Earth was updated with a GeoEye layer that provides high-resolution satellite images.

[1:55:17 PM] BCI-Paula Allen: Google set up a GeoEye Featured Imagery layer in Google Earth for satellite photos http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/2010/01/25/google-adds-geoeye-layer-to-earth-zoo-to-maps
[1:56:30 PM] BCI-Paula Allen: Internal images, too (my nightmare scenario is coming closer!) On a somewhat related note, Google is also now mapping interiors of places. Before you get too worked up, don’t worry, they’re not coming into your house), but they do have imagery up from within the San Diego Zoo
[1:57:14 PM] BCI-Paula Allen: I want to trademark a new term: “Google potato”

Brilliant idea! Both clever and original! Unlike China’s newest search engine, Goojje. Google’s sister? More like Google’s identity stealing clone.

Apple finally announced its touchscreen tablet, the iPad, this week. I wrote about the Apple hype machine yesterday, and by now you’ve probably read all there is to know about the device. But I can’t in good conscience write an end-of-week recap without mentioning the iPad, so here:

[1:52:45 PM] BCI-Virginia Nussey: http://www.buzzfeed.com/dinoi/a-comparative-chart-between-two-tablets-dj0
[1:52:54 PM] BCI-Virginia Nussey: how do you multi task with a stone?
[1:53:01 PM] BCI-Virginia Nussey: you can bash people in the head with it?
[1:53:05 PM] BCI-Virginia Nussey: you can do that with the ipad too!

Other acceptable answers the writers discussed: lap warmer, lap desk and something you can simultaneously read and write on. Who says the iPad can’t multi task? [It can be a paperweight too. Which is probably the best use for it. --Susan]

Things I learned from Boing Boing this week:

  • Who says New Yorkers are cold and isolated? They’ll willingly carry a stranger on their back!
  • I’ve never felt sympathy for a robot before… Keep your spirits high, little Spirit!
  • You know those gorgeous, iridescent blue butterflies? Turns out they’re quite the deceivers.
  • Forget jet-setting in a giant suite. I’d much rather get a ticket in cuddle class!
  • The world’s largest island on a lake, on an island, on a lake, on an island…

+ SEO News: Quick Hits for Internet Marketers By admin 19 January 2010 at 5:39 pm and have No Comments

It’s been a really newsy sort of month. In fact, on tomorrow’s SEM Synergy, our weekly radio show/podcast on WebmasterRadio.fm, Bruce delves into the news with his analysis of how recent world and technology developments will affect the Internet marketing industry.

Plus guest Bryan Eisenberg, accomplished Internet marketer and author of bestselling books Waiting for Your Cat to Bark and Always Be Testing, comes on the show to talk about the trends he sees for SEO in 2010 — but it isn’t Wednesday yet, and this isn’t SEM Synergy Extras, so tune back in tomorrow for a good time with Bryan and the BCI crew!

In the meantime I’m going to stick to the news vein with a round-up of news stories and developments with special pertinence to search marketers.

Holiday Season Boosts Click Fraud

WebProNews reported today that the click fraud rate spiked in the fourth quarter. Among the findings in the report by traffic quality solutions provider Anchor Intelligence:

  • The click fraud rate hit a high of 25.5 percent in the fourth quarter, up from 18.6 percent in Q3.
  • Anchor Intelligence attributes the spike to cybercriminals trying to take advantage of the traditionally high volume of ad spend during the holiday season.
  • Anchor Intelligence expects the click fraud rate to increase over the next as a result of the increasing adoption of social networks.

Google’s Battle Against China’s Government Continues

In a recent development regarding Google’s protests against the Chinese government, the company has indefinitely postponed the launch of Google mobile handsets in China. Last week Google went public with an announcement that their relationship with the Chinese government had strained following a cyber attack on the Internet services company which resulted in the theft of Google’s intellectual property. Google said that the company would no longer censor its search results to comply with censorship laws in the country.

In an opinion published by the Chicago Tribune, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Clarence Page put the unfolding events into scary perspective:

“That may be the real story behind Google’s pushback against the Chinese government. It follows a series of aggressive moves by China’s government that espionage and foreign policy experts say could be the opening rounds in an escalating 21st century cyber war.”

According to Almost Half of Google News Readers, a Headline is Enough

In its third annual News Users’ report, research and analytics firm Outsell says that 44 percent of visitors to Google News, a news aggregator, scan headlines without clicking through to the original news source. It’s a frightening statistic for online publishers struggling to make money in the era of free content. Other challenging realities for the news and publishing industry:

  • An overwhelming 90 percent of news readers say they won’t pay for a print news subscription in order to receive online access.
  • According to 75 percent of respondents, if their newspapers required a paid subscription they’d look elsewhere.
  • When looking for current events, 57 percent of news users turn to digital sources, up 24 percent from a few years ago.

+ Thesis Affiliate Program Moving to Share a Sale By admin 13 January 2010 at 7:50 am and have No Comments

image of telephone

Last year was big for the Thesis Theme for WordPress, and our awesome affiliates played a huge role in that. But we’re just getting started.

In 2009, we paid $392,828.80 to Thesis affiliates.

In 2010, we’re aiming for $1 million in affiliate payouts.

To accomplish that goal, it’s time for the DIYthemes affiliate program to once again take a step up. While the wonderful Missy Ward helped us grow last year, this year we aim to accelerate that trend by moving from an in-house to a world-class program.

To do that, we need a world-class affiliate management partner. For us, Share a Sale is the only logical choice.

Why Make a Switch?

We’ve always tried to run a different kind of affiliate initiative, in that we don’t view affiliates as an alternate sales channel that our direct efforts compete with. Instead, we go out of our way to promote the tutorials, resources, and content our affiliates create, because that’s a great thing for us as well.

But when one realizes some have 6-figure businesses revolving around promoting Thesis, while others pay their mortgages each month as our affiliates, perspective tends to change.

It’s at that point you realize that nothing but the best possible solution is an absolute requirement. Our affiliates (call it sentimental if you wish) are part of our family.

In other words, we need to stop trying to save a buck by running our affiliate program ourselves, and start delivering the best program possible. In fact, from this point forward, all of our major affiliate programs will be run with Share a Sale.

Why Share a Sale?

Here are the reasons that drove our decision to go with Share a Sale (SAS):

Tracking – SAS has robust, battle-tested affiliate link tracking that makes sure sales don’t slip through the cracks. With our in-house system, we used a “belt and suspenders” approach because we knew we couldn’t trust the front-end tracking to catch every sale.

Our affiliates never got cheated because we paid four-figures monthly to manually reconcile every transaction. With a high-volume product like Thesis, that just doesn’t scale. Plus, affiliates don’t get accurate real-time sales data. Problem solved with SAS.

Support – A bigger issue with an in-house program serving a large amount of marketing partners is affiliate support. Remember, DIYthemes is essentially a two-person company with three incredible support ninjas.

Most of the focus of that support team is on customers, where it must be. Moving to SAS means world-class affiliate support powered by years and years of experience, rather than us trying to staff up with newbies on our end.

Trust – Never mind the stellar reputation Share a Sale enjoys in the affiliate marketing world. Never mind that many of our top-earning affiliates practically demanded we make the move.

The final selling point for me was SAS CEO Brian Littleton, who (ironically) I’ve never seen do any selling at all. This guy runs a powerful company, and yet not only takes time for a jerk like me, but for each and every person that catches him at a conference. A true gentleman in the truest sense of the word, and I dig that.

What Does This Mean for Existing Thesis Affiliates?

Okay, so here are the important details.

Whether you are:

  • An existing Thesis affiliate without a Share a Sale account;
  • An existing Thesis affiliate with a Share a Sale account; or
  • Someone who wants to become a Thesis affiliate . . .

Sign up here for the new Thesis affiliate program.

Go ahead and do that right now, no matter which category you’re in.

If you’re an existing affiliate, come back for further details about the transition. The short version is, we’re taking good care of existing marketing partners so you won’t lose a single sale.

What About My Old Thesis Links?

As current Thesis affiliates know, we use a 60-day cookie. That means if you send someone to the diythemes.com site today, and they buy anytime within the next 60 days, you get credit for the sale.

We’re keeping the old program active for 60 days from today, so you won’t lose any sales you would have otherwise been credited for. But you need to go ahead and change your affiliate links as soon as possible in order to start tracking new leads and sales through the Share a Sale system.

While you technically have 60 days to change your old links, you could actually miss sales by waiting due to the cookie issue. Plus, at the end of 60 days, your old links won’t pass commissions at all.

So, complete the quick sign-up process with Share a Sale today.

Existing Thesis affiliates will be getting notifications and reminders by email. I wish we could just port everyone over, but we can’t do that. So don’t delay and you won’t miss out on great revenue opportunities with Thesis in 2010.

+ 10 Steps to Build a $50 iPhone App for Your Blog By admin 05 January 2010 at 9:30 pm and have No Comments

If you’re reading this site, you’re probably a blogger or someone interested in making tons of money from blogging at home. With the world going mobile and online even more than ever before, you’re going to have to make your presence known on the go, so you don’t get left in the proverbial dust.

Since I do a lot of the iPhone development for my current company, I have learned so much about the industry and how important it is for people to really put your presence in mobile devices and with my relatively young site Lakers Nation, I wanted to create an iPhone application to compliment our ever-expanding Twitter (@LakersNation) and Facebook Fan Page (Facebook.com/LakersNation) presence,  that could really give Laker Fans all over the world a way to read our content in the best possible mobile format. I’ve reached out to dozens of vendors from all around the world and the starting price for some of these apps would start off at like $5,000 because of the relatively low supply of developers in this highly demanded market.

Then I read a Mashable Article that had me jumping out of my seat – Build an iPhone App for $50? – I thought there was no way possible that could be, but I checked out the video and low and behold, it’s true. I created one for Lakers Nation in less than 10 minutes then gave John a quick IM and told him I’d make him one, too – so tempted to charge him more, but bad karma stopped me.

So, let’s get started on how you can build an iPhone App for $50.

1) Go to AppMakr.com and register for an account – no affiliate link or anything. I’m not making a dime off this and neither is John (yes, he resisted, but it’s for the betterment of the blogosphere!)

2) Once you’ve created an account and logged in, you’ll be directed to your App Manager Page. To get started, you’ll want to press the “Create an App” Tab on the upper left as seen below:

3) Choose which iPhone App template you’d like to use – Since they are new, you only have one option, so press “Choose This”

4) Submit your RSS Feed of your Blog as I show you below. If you’re using wordpress, you’ll find that adding “/feed” to the end of your category URLs is going to come in very handy.

5) Now, we’re getting into the main graphics of the app. If you have any custom logos, you should get them ready. Here’s what you’re going to need:

  • 512 x 512 pixel Logo – This will be the “button” on the iPhone Menu.
  • 320 x 480 pixel Splash Screen – This is the loading screen which is the first graphic your app will load.

6) Creating Buttons that represent different feeds to different parts of your site. Remember when I told you that “/feed” comes in handy, well, this is where they come in. These are the feeds that I will be submitting for John’s site by pressing the “+ Add RSS/Atom Feed URL”:

  • Blogging – http://www.johnchow.com/category/blogging/feed
  • Fine Dining – http://www.johnchow.com/category/fine-dining/feed

This is what it looks like:

Now you may think these are a crapload of categories aka buttons to put into the app, but there is a more button users can press on their iPhones and if they would like to rearrange the buttons on the bottom, it’s as simple as drag and dropping.

7) This is the final customization part of the look and feel of the app, so this is what you’re going to need here:

  • 320 x 46 pixel Header Image – This is located at the top of the app at all times.
  • Color Codes for Fonts – Linked and Regular – I would suggest similar color scheme to your current blog.

8) Monetizing your iPhone App. To get started, you’ll need to select one of these Mobile Ad Platforms. For Google’s Sake, we’re picking AdMob – Sign up with them and get your publisher ID to put here:

John has decided to make his first iPhone app Ad free, so you won’t be seeing this implemented.

9) Publish your App – This is the part where you’re going to see $199 and freak out, but guess what, I’ve got a coupon from Mashable to save you $150 bucks that expires 1/6/10, so HURRY! Ready? Type “MASHABLE” into the Coupon Field like I did below then press Publish.

10) Once you have paid the $50 for the iPhone App, you’ll be asked to submit details for your App, so that it is listed properly in the iTunes store. Submission and approval takes about 2-4 weeks even though AppMakr is claiming 1-2 week turnaround. I guess YMMV here.

That really did just take 10 steps and I hope you really enjoyed this tutorial.
