+ Locksmith Spam on Bing? You Bet By admin 28 May 2009 at 9:06 pm and have No Comments

During all the coverage of Microsoft’s new “Bing” on Search Engine Land today, David Mihm wondered what Bing looks like on a search for locksmiths in NYC and hoped maybe MSFT would clean up the spam a bit. Apparently not:

Here’s the thing: The switch to Bing apparently doesn’t include an algorithm/relevance update, only changes to the functionality and user interface of Live Search. In fact, run that same query on Live Search and you should see the same exact results (albeit with only a 3-pack instead of the new 8-pack).

I really like some of the new functionality that Bing offers, but if you’re expecting better local search results, you’ll be disappointed. Lipstick, meet pig.

(BTW, you can click that screenshot for a larger version.)

+ What Matters in Local SEO in 2009 By admin 26 May 2009 at 11:38 pm and have No Comments

local search ranking factors

If you’re a small business owner, chances are pretty good that Local SEO matters to you. If you think it would help to understand how Google and Yahoo rank web sites in their local search results, please check out the Local Search Ranking Factors 2009, published today by David Mihm.

I’m one of 27 SEOs that David invited to contribute to this year’s survey. He sends us a huge list of factors that may affect how a web page is ranked in local results, and we respond by rating each factor and giving opinions to support our ratings.

It’s something you’ll want to bookmark and re-read a few times. Not that any of the 27 of us have the exact secrets from Google and Yahoo’s algorithms, but there’s a lot of experience in that list of panelists and you’re sure to end up smarter by reading it.
