ViperChill – Great Blog That Makes No Money

Glen’s blog, ViperChill, is unique in two ways. The first is the blog makes no money. Now, you might be asking, “What’s so unique about that? My blog makes no money!” This by choice and not by design. ViperChill has nearly 5,000 RSS readers and each post has over 50 comments in them. The blog gets enough traffic to make thousands per month but Glen has chosen to not monetize it.

Welcome to ViperChill. I’m Glen – one of the few people who makes a living online without doing it by teaching you how to make a living online. Because of that, you’ll find no ads and no affiliate links here. It’s all about the content and helping you as much as possible. As it should be.

It’s OK To Make Money

While I don’t have a problem with Glen not monetizing ViperChill, I feel it’s a poor use of resources. I was making money online long before John Chow dot Com came along. The main reason I monetized the blog was to show money can be made by blogging, but another reason was I don’t like seeing sites that could be making a ton of money not making it.

Yes, it sounds good to say you’re not making money off the blog because you want to provide pure information. However, from a business point of view, leaving money on the table isn’t so smart. If Glen doesn’t need any income from ViperChill, I think he can actually increase his brand by monetizing the blog and giving the money away to charity. What sounds better? I don’t make money from this blog or I donate every dollar this blog makes? Whether Glen makes money from ViperChill or not, I’ll still be reading it.

Now that the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games are over, we’re all suffering from post Olympic blues. The blues have especially hit hard for Ed Lau, who has been cruising downtown everyday hoping to find a street party that is no longer there. Seeing the sad state everyone was in, it made sense to hold this edition of Dot Com Pho at Happy Pho because if anyone can cheer us up, it would be Happy Brian.

Joining us for this Pho get together were the regulars like Aaron Koo, Michael “FATal1ty” Yurechko, Wolfgang, Christl, Bonnie and Marilyn. Ed finally realized there wasn’t going to be a block party at Robson Square and showed up last. We were also joined by the George Moen, the President of Blenz Coffee. I want to thank George for giving everyone who showed up at Dot Com Pho, Blenz coffee for life. I plan to make maximum use of that!

Dot Com Pho – Post Olympic Blues Edition

Twitter is worth an estimated $1.5 billion. For most of us, it’s a figure that we simply cannot afford. However, if your name is Mark Z and you have $300 million in cash and $4 billion in Facebook stock, the story might be a little different. Still, Mark wasn’t sure if he could afford Twitter so he decided to call up financial guru Suze Orman during her “Can I afford it” segment to see if Miss Orman would approve of Mark spending $1.5 billion on the micro blogging platform.

Can I Afford To Buy Twitter?

During the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics, we had a chance to head down to the Yaletown Cactus Club Cafe and sample the new Rob Feenie menu items plus enjoyed some of his old favorites. Chef Feenie is the Food Concept Architect at the Cactus Club Cafe, a chain of 20 restaurants with locations in British Columbia and Alberta. Chef Feenie is Canada’s Iron Chef, a title he earned when he defeated Masaharu Morimoto in Iron Chef America, Battle Crab. To this date, Chef Feenie has been the only Canadian chef to ever win against an Iron Chef.

The new Cactus Club menu contains three new signature dishes by Chef Feenie. Well, it’s actually two new dishes and one tweaked dish. In addition to the new items, the menu at Cactus Club Yaletown offered all the old RF signature dishes except for the BBQ Duck Clubhouse, which happens to be one of my favorite items (the Cactus Club in West Van has it).

Rob’s Hunter Chicken

The first new RF dish is simply call Rob’s Hunter Chicken and features a fresh full breast of chicken that has been brined to a juicy perfection for twenty four hours in a mixture of sugar, salt and spices. The chicken is then bedded on crispy oven roasted fingerling potatoes tossed in lemon thyme vinaigrette, crunchy buttered green beans and a rich four mushroom veal demi glace sauce. Damn! It was good!

Sake-soy Marinated Sablefish

The second new RF dish was the Sake-soy Marinated Sablefish. This Japanese inspired sablefish dish is a light and healthy choice (which really appealed to Sarah). The sablefish is baked and served with buttery fingerling potatoes, shiitake mushrooms and steamed asparagus in a pure dashi broth. One of the best sabelfish dishes I’ve ever tried.

Ravioli & Prawn Trio

This is the tweaked dish. It started live as the Butternut Squash Ravioli but Rob turned it into a signature appetizer by topping it each ravioli with a pan seared jumbo prawn and a crispy sage leaf. If you like the Butternut Squash Ravioli, you’ll love the Ravioli & Prawn Trio.

Beef Carpaccio

One of my all time favorite appetizer. Peppercorn-crusted tenderloin with grainy dijon aioli, pickled shallots, fried capers, parmesan and five-herb crostini. It just melts in your mouth.

Short Rib Sandwich

The short rib sandwich with caramelized onions, beef jus and emmental cheese on toasted sourdough. It’s real cool twist on the classic beef dip. It’s normally served with sea-salted fries but we subbed in the salad because if Sally Chow sees fries anywhere, she won’t eat anything else!

Prawn & Scallop Spaghetti

Prawn & Scallop Spaghetti, made with pan seared prawns and scallops, roasted tomato sauce, garlic and Parmesan crostini. This is one of the best pasta dish in Vancouver.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Crunch Bar

Rob showed off this dessert at Taste of Yaletown and it has become a best seller at Cactus Club. One bite and you’ll understand why. To this day Ed Lau still raves about it. The bar is made from smooth peanut butter and dark chocolate mousse top a crunchy chocolate base. Finished with caramel sauce, crunchy chocolate pearls and tahitian vanilla bean ice cream.

Trying Out The New Rob Feenie Menu At Cactus Club Cafe Yaletown

AzoogleAds has posted the Top 40 Leaderboard for their 2010 Party At The Playboy Mansion Publisher Challenge. Only the publisher ID is show on the leaderboard to protect the privacy of the top affiliates. If your pub ID is on the list, it means you’re on your way to an all expense paid mega party at the Playboy Mansion. You just need to keep your name on the list until the challenge is over.

The Challenge

For publishers who drive the highest amount of incremental revenue through the AzoogleAds network during the period of February 1, 2010 at 12:01AM EST to July 31, 2010 Midnight EST versus the prior 6-month period (August 1, 2009 to January 31, 2010).

Example: Publisher A drives $15,000 in revenue from Feb. 1, 2010 to July 31, 2010. Publisher A had driven $5,000 in revenue from August 1, 2009 to Jan. 31, 2010. Publisher A, therefore, has $10,000 in incremental revenue for the purpose of the challenge. The Top 40 publishers win a party at the Playboy Mansion. In addition, the Top 5 publishers will get a donation made by Epic in their name to the charity of their choice.
