How a $50 packet of Tim Tams could get you a Blogger Job 14 February 2010 at 5:57 am by admin

Guest post by Ainslie Hunter from Study Skills Mentor and EduWebMedia.

timtams.jpgI found my dream job…. and I mean dream job. A blogger / editor job for an experienced teacher. It was there in black and white on the Problogger Job Boards. Sure it was December 21, but I had finished my Christmas Shopping so I sat down and got started.

A Regular Job Interview Process

In my teaching career I have applied for 5 jobs. Face to face interviews are easy. You send in the resume, they check your references and then you hopefully get an interview. My interviews have never lasted more than 30 minutes and I have found out the outcome in a couple of days.

Does that sound familiar to you?

Well applying for an online job is a whole different game.

Problogger Job Interview Process

To gain an online job as a Blogger / Editor I have completed six general steps, and one that is a little crazy.

The application

If you are a regular reader of the Problogger Job board you will notice a trend in Job descriptions. A writing job is pretty straightforward. But many of the Blogger / Editor positions are long and vague. This job wanted a blogger who could do it all, but didn’t give out specifics of the time, pay, or responsibilities.

So I applied with two documents. The first was a standard cover letter and resume that listed my education and experience in teaching and blogging. The second was a two page proposal outlining my strategy for the company. I didn’t know what they wanted, but knew that my resume wouldn’t have given them enough information.

First email contact

About a week later I received an email from the company. They loved my proposal but were worried about location issues; they were in the US and I was here in Australia. I answered with strategies on how to deal with time difference and how we could overcome my lack of understanding of US education issues. For each point, I could see many positives from being outside of the US.

Skype Interview

Another week went by and I had a Skype Interview planned for 5:30 in the morning. It would have been so much easier to go to someone’s office then to have an interview online. Since it was a video conference I had to make sure I didn’t look like I just crawled out of bed, my office had to be clean and my 2 year old had to be bribed with a Macca’s breakfast.

The interview lasted nearly an hour and was a standard interview, once I got over the fact that I was on a massive projector screen.

Second Proposal

I decided to write a second proposal. It was a synthesis of ideas that came from the interview. An impression from the interview was a concern that I was an unknown person from destination elsewhere. So in the proposal I also gave examples of accountability practices that we could use to keep track of me.

Writing Assignment

On the 15th of January I was asked to submit a blog article on behaviour management. We had three days to write the post. Simple enough but I took a few risks with my approach.

Keeping up with Appearances

During the month I also made sure I looked after my blog and readers. I spent more time crafting blogs, wrote a Guest Post and became more involved on Twitter. I also put out a call for guest posts (as it was something that concerned the interviewers) Google Analytics is a wonderful tool and I was able to tell that the company was monitoring my blog on a regular basis.

Little Bit Crazy

Well now a month has gone by and the company still hasn’t made a decision yet. I wanted to make them know that I was still excited about the job and that I have strong convictions about my ability as a blogger. I wanted to stand out of the crowd. So I got a little adventurous…

I sent a Thank You Card and a box of Tim Tams. Express. To America. With a note that said “Let’s have another chat over Skype. I have supplies the Tim Tams.

I had just read a quote from Teresa Taylor, “I never hire someone without having a meal with them. I am absolutely convinced that that’s how you see what people are really like…you can pick up all these lifestyle things that you can’t get out of questioned them sitting in your office.” I wanted to show them that I was happy to have a chat over coffee so they could get to know me better.

I reached out to an online friend. Josh from World’s Strongest Librarian put my post on his site. I wanted to see how others would respond to my story.

I sent this post to Darren.

So Did the Tim Tam’s work? Not sure. I just checked Australia Post and they are still in transit. Somewhere between LA and New York.

I still hope I get the job. I really do want it. But this experience has taught me so much about applying for online positions. Whilst blogging experience is important, what our future employers are looking for is someone they can trust. Especially if that person will be blogging from destination unknown.

We all know that trust takes time to develop with our own blog readers. But time is not a commodity you have when applying and interviewing for an online job. So you also need to find a way to show entrepreneurial spirit.

Have you got any great strategies on how to ace a blogger job and? Let us know.

Over the week between Christmas and New Year I took the week off from blogging here on ProBlogger and posted a simple series of ‘best of posts’ from 2009 in 5 different categories.

I had so much good feedback from sharing these links (a couple of them went pretty wild on Twitter particularly) that I thought I’d repost the complete list for those who also took that week off.

All in all those lists contain 52 links to the most popular posts on ProBlogger in 2009 and hopefully they will help resource you for 2010!

+ Dot Com Pho – The Pho Is On Me Edition By admin 26 December 2009 at 8:55 pm and have No Comments

Maybe it was because it was Christmas but for whatever reason, I decided that Dot Com Pho would be on me today. I sent out that a tweet that anyone showing up for the weekly Pho meet up would get free Pho and free Broke DVD as well. Upon hearing that, Michael Kwan flew back from frozen Edmonton. We had a total of ten people attend the free Pho day, which is pretty good considering that many of the regulars were away for the holidays. Everyone who showed up had a great time and ate more Pho than they normally would if they had to pay for themselves. Stephen Fung really went to lunch! I think he accounted for 1/4 of the entire bill.

Anyone is welcome to join us for Dot Com Pho. Follow me on Twitter to find the time and location of the next one. For The Pho Is On Me Edition of Dot Com Pho, we have what we got for Christmas, strange new Pho dishes, eating maggots with cheese, the gadget of the week and finding a sponsor to pay for the Pho so I don’t have to do. Watch the video to see if I succeeded.

+ Merry Christmas To All My Readers By admin 25 December 2009 at 9:58 am and have No Comments

I figured everyone is with friends and family today to celebrate Christmas. I know I am. However, I want to take some time out to wish all John Chow dot Com readers a very merry Christmas. I hope you get everything you wished for and that your holiday will be a happy and safe one.

Like last year, this Christmas will be spent with my family. We’re all heading to my parent’s place for Christmas dinner and to give and receive our presents. I have no idea what I spent on gifts this year because I didn’t do the shopping, Sarah did. I guess I will find out when the Visa bill shows up. Hopefully, it won’t be too scary.

+ Happy Christmas from ProBlogger By admin 24 December 2009 at 8:14 am and have No Comments

Just a short note to wish those of you celebrating Christmas a Happy day.

Thanks to everyone for your support and encouragement this year. It’s been a fun and rewarding year and I do appreciate all that you contribute to this site.

People often ask at this time of year what a ProBlogger does for Christmas. It’s a fairly typical day really, although it is summer here so more of our activities tend to be outside wearing shorts and T-shirts than many of you are doing in colder parts of the world. We’ll be having breakfast, lunch and dinner with different parts of the family and doing Church in the morning as well – a pretty full day (although all of the meals are within 3-4 minutes of our house so not too much travel which is nice).

I hope that your day is a fun, happy and meaningful one.

See you in the coming days!

+ Friday Recap: Midweek Minicap Edition By admin 23 December 2009 at 5:33 pm and have No Comments

Happy, er, Wednesday? With Christmas just around the corner it’s a short week for most, so you get your mini recap early.

This morning Bruce Clay, Inc. came together for some jolly making around the tree. Hot cocoa, apple cider and eggnog were all close at hand, though it was an otherwise dry gathering. Nowadays “dry” doesn’t necessarily mean alcohol-free. With the help of a newly developed technique, vodka and other liquors can now be distributed in pill form. Can you say “trouble”? [To clarify, there was no drinking going on at the party. --Susan] Please! I had a belly full of cocoa!

We also held a Secret Santa gift exchange this year, and I had no idea the secret was supposed to stay a secret! I want to thank my Santa for their thoughtful gift! (If you’re reading this, I love my gift! Whoever you are, you have excellent taste!) If you’re stumped for gift ideas, consider making a donation in someone’s name to one of these worthy charities.

There’s the Red Cross:

[12/22/09 2:34:44 PM] BCI-Paula Allen: I had no idea the Red Cross can be called out with the fire dept

There’s also the Modest Needs Foundation [I'm planning on donating to this in the upcoming year. --Susan]:

[12/22/2009 11:12:27 AM] BCI-Susan Esparza: Aw, heartwarming.

holiday party
Deena and daughter Jayna at the BCI holiday party!

Helping us to be responsible consumers, Ann Smarty informs us of the “greenness” of online shopping. Spoiler alert: while online shopping can be greener in certain circumstances, there’s really no cut and dry answer. Shop smart!

Today’s holiday party was a reminder of the power of community to spirit to bring joy and togetherness. Last week we were reminded that community spirit should be a part of your online efforts in Does Your Website Have Community Spirit? because a sense of belonging goes a long way.

An old Christmas classic was given a clever search twist in Twas the Night Before Caffeine. Who knew search engine infrastructure could be so festive?!

Here’s another Christmas tradition gone mod:

[12/18/2009 8:57:46 AM] BCI-Susan Esparza: I think there is a limit to the level of bacon related products that you can have before they become tiresome. These are still on the awesome side of the line.

This next one’s on the infuriating side of the line. It appears that Verizon has made it so that Storm 2 BlackBerry devices on the network are restricted to search only Microsoft Bing from the browser’s search box. I can understand setting the default search engine, but making it impossible to set the search box to anything but Bing is going too far.

The Google Blogoscoped blog also scooped a new Google tool:

[12/22/09 3:02:07 PM] BCI-Susan Esparza: neat little tool

The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy has launched a forum to discuss public access to federally funded research. The forum is set to run through January 7 and will move on to the next stage from there. Let your voice be heard.

While that sounds really smart, here’s something a little less intellectual:

[12/18/2009 3:55:10 PM] BCI-Paula Allen: Note to self: Register howtoturnoffcapslock.com; make millions.

We’re reaching the end of a year, nay, a decade! As is tradition, the end of something means lots of reflective lists. For a laugh, enjoy the top 10 stories on Digg, and in a more serious vein, check out the top 50 SEO posts of 2009.

Kristy Bolsinger’s list was more forward looking than those above, in All I Want For Christmas — A Social Media Wish List — great tips for any social media marketer.

And just for fun, I’m going to close on a totally unrelated note — Susan’s favorite Gawker picks this week (all commentary is by Susan, copy-pasted from our Skype convo):

  • Facebook doesn’t care about Fort Hood (and other inflammatory deductions).
  • Submitted without commentary.
  • You know you’d do the same thing.

Happy holidays, everyone! (And be sure to come back tomorrow for a rare glimpse of Santa Clay!)

+ #YVRMeetups – The Meetup of all Meetups By admin 15 December 2009 at 11:07 pm and have No Comments

Meetup of Meetups

I just got back form the Meetup of all Meetups. Every year around Christmas time, a bunch of Meetup group get together to hold the Meetup of all Meetups. Everyone joined forces with the likes of the Real Estate Technology Meetup Group, Vancouver Blogger’s Meetup, the Young Professionals Meetup and other groups for one big year end social mixer.

Many of these Meetups share the same members and same goals; to help people connect, share best practices and create community. The Meetup of all Meetups brought together over 500 of Vancouver’s elites and peons for a night of networking, drinking and a trouble making.

Door prizes valued up to $500.00 were donated by The Vancouver Board of Trade, Ceilis Irish Pub, Reachd, and Ubertor as well as several other organizations. I wanted to give away the OhMiBod sex toy but the meetup turned it down. There was a contest to see who can post the best twitpic. Your first drink was on the Ceilis pub. However, I ended up with five because, well, I’m John Chow!
