+ Why Google HQ Loves Thin Affiliates By admin 17 November 2009 at 7:51 am and have No Comments

Post image for Why Google HQ Loves Thin Affiliates

Despite what you may have read, Google secretly has a love affair with thin affiliates. Like a techie and Gizmodo, Google can’t get enough of affiliate marketers who build sites with no value add. If Google has its own internal Twitter, Eric Schmidt would tweet, “I heart affs who rely on search to power their business model.” Why?

Google loves thin affiliate sites because they:

1) Are lazy.

2) Lack brands that would cause people to be loyal to them.

3) Give Google their AdWords data.

4) [Sometimes] do Google’s testing for Google. [NB: A high converting lander doesn't lift you above the status of thin affiliate.]

5) Repeat what’s in a datafeed verbatim, making it easier to pinpoint key data in the absence of a Google base feed. For those of you in this boat, read Rae on how to handle affiliate datafeeds properly.

All of this enables Google to launch affiliate sites like its mortgage comparison tool, which sells traffic on a cost-per-lead basis. Aaron Wall has also pointed out that Google’s getting into retail affiliate marketing, which will increase as universal results become more widespread.

Google loves thin affiliates because they’re no competition. They’re disposable.

I told you guys over a year ago that Google aims to be the world’s biggest affiliate. Thin affiliates are a lovely source of competitive intelligence.

What’s the takeaway for internet marketers?

Google is progressively taking all the value in search traffic for itself. If this trend continues in the long term, search will gradually become a lower-and-lower ROI marketing channel as competitors bid the traffic/leads etc into the stratosphere.

And that’s not just for affiliates! Google is taking on Amazon too, though that battle should won’t be as easy as picking on thin affiliates. What’s the difference?

Amazon has:

  • A huge brand. Even if Amazon blocked Googlebot in its robots.txt, people would still visit Amazon to shop online.
  • A first-mover advantage in ebook readers with the Kindle.
  • Other marketing channels, including its affiliate program, public relations etc.

While it’s trite by now, Internet marketers – both affiliates and merchants – would do well to imitate Amazon. Developing a brand, a first-mover advantage, and non-search marketing channels are going to be increasingly important for online businesses to minimize their risk.

Sadly, this suggests that we’ll see a swing back from permission marketing to interruption marketing. Not tomorrow or even in 2010, but very slowly over the next few years. Wonder what Seth Godin would think of that?

+ Google Whacking on Bing By admin 12 October 2009 at 1:00 am and have No Comments

Post image for Google Whacking on Bing

If you’ve been involved in SEO for a while chances are you’ve heard the term google whacking. For those of you that haven’t basically it was coming up with a search term for a real word that had exactly one result. Due to the way Google does things now it’s nearly impossible, and hardly any fun to try and find one anymore. However with bing it’s entirely possible, and in some cases it looks intentional. Here’s an example go to Bing and do a search for [perez hilton] screen shot of my results below for reference.

perez-bing

Being a well known, popular, and controversial celebrity blogger, he really should have more results, for example check out google [perez hilton] and yahoo [perez hilton]. So have you seen any other intentional one listing only results in bing, if so drop them in the comments below …

+ How to Turn Off Personalized Search in Google Chrome By admin 08 August 2009 at 5:19 am and have No Comments

Post image for How to Turn Off Personalized Search in Google Chrome

With the impending arrival of Google OS I’ve been spending more time in Google Chrome, and figuring out how to customize things to my liking. Here’s a tip on how to turn off personalized search in Google Chrome.

First thing you want to do is click the wrench icon on the Google Chrome toolbar and select options, when the dialog box pops up, select the manage button next to search engine listings
882009_75228 AM

When the list of search engine pops up choose Google, you’ll see there are three values listed the third one is the one you’re concerned with copy and paste it to your favorite text editor

882009_75439 AM

You should have a text line that looks like this

{google:baseURL}search{google:RLZ}{google:acceptedSuggestion}{google:originalQueryForSuggestion}
sourceid=chrome&ie={inputEncoding}&q=%s

That’s the code that google uses to form your search query. To turn off personalized search you need to add the following parameter on to the end

&pws=0

close one dialog box and click “add” a new box will pop up, name your new search engine differently than any of the others (the checkbox will turn green when you do) and paste the code with the [&pws=0] on the end into the bottom box

I prefer all of my searches to be non personalized so I made it my default, but that’s up to you. Execute a search and check for the [&pws=0] parameter and you’re good to go.

+ Can You Get a Website Indexed with No Links and XML Sitemaps? By admin 30 June 2009 at 1:59 am and have No Comments

Post image for Can You Get a Website Indexed with No Links and XML Sitemaps?

This weekend I was doing a little housekeeping on some of my domains and hosting accounts and decided to test and see if it was possible to get a website indexed using XML Sitemaps and no external links.

Since some piano player in New Jersey owns the domain MichaelGray.com I had a few options but the best was to go with my middle initial and byt the domain MichaelAGray.com. Since I’m all about wordpress as a CMS I put the files up, put up my theme of choice thesis, tweaked it with the thesis reputation skin, and installed the XML Sitemaps plugin. I set it up to ping all of the search engines as shown below:

xml-sitemap.png

Within 4 days the homepage for the domain was showing in Bing and Google as shown below (yahoo just didn’t love me enough)

I’m a big advocate of using sitemaps, and I think this demonstrates their effectiveness. Unless you have a really small site or really good site architecture, chances are some parts of your website aren’t as exposed, or well linked as others, and this helps you spoon feed the search engines your content insuring better crawling.

That’s not to say you should use sitemaps and not worry about spiders being able to crawl, because internal anchor text can play a huge role in SEO. However use on XML sitemaps as a redundant backup plan to help make sure you fully crawled and indexed.
