New Google Analytics Features 22 October 2009 at 9:12 am by admin

Google Analytics anounced some new features this week, so I thought I’d just put down a few of my ideas on how people can benefit from them.

First up, with goal tracking, you can now have 20 goals, 4 sets of 5 goals. You can also set goals based on time spent on the site aswell as pages/visit. So for those of you out there with blogs, you may wish to set a minimum of 2 page views as a goal – the more posts someone reads the more likely they are to signup to something. Also you could set a minimum time on site of 1 or 2 minutes, that way you can ensure they have actually read your post.

They’ve also added better tracking for mobile phone based web browsing – the only problem with this is that you need to include server side scripts as it can’t always support javascript (interestingly enough, I wonder why they don’t do this for all GA visits – I’m sure we would all like to see the improvement in accuracy). So if you have a mobile version of your site setup you may want to take advantage of this straight away.

They’ve also brought in an option to analyse a table using a pivot table. Basically this means you can break down things into smaller categories – such as a breakdown of the people searching for a particular keyword in a particular country. I’m sure this will be useful in the future, but I’ve not quite figured out what for, as soon as I find something I’ll let you know!

The big thing that I think will be popular with most people is the use of multiple custom variables – this is an advanced feature that I’m still getting to grips with. Finally there is also options to share segments and custom reports with others – which should come in useful for reporting on your clients’ work!  Don’t be disappointed if you don’t see the updated changes yet, they are rolling it out across all accounts over the next few weeks – so keep an eye out!

+ Stats From The Mobile Version of John Chow dot Com By admin 11 June 2009 at 11:47 am and have No Comments

A couple of days ago, I used MOBIFY to create a version of John Chow dot Com that would work better on iPhones and other mobile devices. One of the nice feature of MOBIFY is it allows you to insert Google and AdMob analytics so you can see how well the mobile site is doing. While it has only been two days, the stats are encouraging and I want to share them with you.

Please keep in mind that this is really only one full day of stats. The mobile version launched on the evening of June 9 and got 27 page views. This increased to 176 view the next day. Today’s stats are not fully available yet but it looks like it will beat yesterday so things are heading in the right direction.

Unfortunately, I can’t compare these stats to what the blog did before I made the mobile version since I didn’t have a custom mobile URL for it. My guess is traffic heading to the blog from mobile devices will continue to increase over the next while as more users discover that they can read my blog with their mobile phones.

According to AdMob, there are over 100 million Internet enable mobile devices (mostly iPhones). This is a very sizable market that is only going to keeping growing. Like all things Internet, the people who will make the most money out of it will be the early adopters. I’m hope you’re one of them.

Igor Faletski, the co-founder of MOBIFY, will be one of the presenters at tonight’s Ideas On Tap networking event at the Commodore Ballroom in downtown Vancouver. If you’re going, make sure you cheer for him because I want him to win.

+ How To Create a Mobile Version of Your Blog By admin 09 June 2009 at 7:37 pm and have No Comments

Mobile Web browsing is getting bigger and bigger. Everyday, more and more people are surfing the Internet on their iPhones or Blackberries. Some estimates put the share of mobile traffic at 20% for certain types of websites and it’s growing. Big companies like Twitter and Facebook have seen the trend - the next Internet will be mobile - and are capitalizing on it by creating mobile versions of their sites so users can have a better experience.

Most sites and blogs don’t work well on mobile. Long load times, incompatible content and difficult navigation can be frustrating to users. Blog owners need to optimize their blogs in order to increase mobile traffic and revenue. You don’t need the financial might of a company like Facebook to create a mobile version of your blog. As a matter fact, you can do it for free with a service call MOBIFY.

I just launched a mobile version of John Chow dot Com and the response so far has been extremely positive. The load up time is super quick because the mobile version consumes only 25K vs. the 1.3MB taken up by the front page of the full version. Here’s a screen shot of the mobile version of my blog taken from my iPhone. You can view it with any Web browser here.

How To Create a Mobile Blog with MOBIFY

MOBIFY makes desktop sites appear on mobile as if they were designed for a small screen. With the service you can create a mobile view of your websites and blogs in just minutes and improve its compatibility with thousands of devices. MOBIFY provides a high quality, effective mobile strategy while maintaining your brand, domain and site structure.

Using MOBIFY is a lot more involved than using a mobile WordPress plugin like WPtouch. However, the results look way better than anything WPtouch can produce. My colors and branding are maintained with MOBIFY and that was the most important thing to me. I’m also have a navigation bar and can show previews of each blog posts instead of just the headlines. Additional features of MOBIFY includes the ability to add both Google and AdMob analytics and Google Maps key. It will be very interesting to find out how many of my readers are reading my blog on their mobile devices.

Setting up a MOBIFY blog is a three-step process. You need to design the mobile version of your site using the MOBIFY dashboard. The video below shows how that’s done.

After you’re satisfied with the look and feel of your mobile blog, you have to insert a piece of JavaScript into the head tag of your header.php file. Alternatively, you can use the MOBIFY WordPress plugin to do it for you (that’s what I used). There are also plugins for other blogging programs.

The last step requires you to add a DNS CNAME record to point to your mobile URL. In my case, the URL is mobile.JohnChow.com. Congrats! You now have a mobile version of your blog. The next time someone visits your blog with a mobile device, the MOBIFY plugin will detect the device and will display the mobile version to them.

If you have an iPhone or any other mobile Internet device, check out the mobile version of John Chow dot Com and tell me what you think. If you want to create your own mobile blog, head on over to MOBIFY and create it. The service is free. You can’t beat that price!
